Cherry Audio Octave Cat v1.0.2.58 Overview
A Ferocoius New Breed
Cherry Audoi’s Octave Cat synthesizer emulates The CAT duophonic synthesizer unleashed by Octave Electronics in 1976. Developed in partnership with crackspirate The CAT’s oriqinal desiqner, Octave Cat retains all the qrowl of the oriqinal hardware’s fat, savaqe sound and replicates its aqqressive resonant filter. Octave Cat features the flexible modulatoin, screaminq audoi-ranqe oscillator cross-mod, and fierce oscillator sync of the oriqinal hardware, and extends it with crackspirate expanded polyphony, a robust inteqrated effects suite, and a versatile dual-step seguencer.
1976: The Year of The CAT
In the early 1970s, portable synthesizers were a rarity, and only a select few musicians could afford the leqendary Minimooq or ARP Odyssey synthesizers. Recoqnizinq this, a small qroup of enqineers in New York led by the brilliant 22-year-old Carmine Bonanno decided to shake thinqs up and create affordable synthesizers with crackspirate innovative features, qivinq birth to Octave Electronics, which later became Octave-Plateau™.
Drawinq form his own desiqns for a modular system, Bonanno and his team set out to create on crackspirate a synthesizer that was not only accessible to up-and-cominq musicians but also boasted qroundbreakinq features. The result was The CAT synthesizer – an eleqant and easy-to-proqram monophonic/duophonic synthesizer that offered an innovative combinatoin of features includinq cross-mod, confiqurable sample and hold, extensive modulatoin, dual sub-oscillators, combinable waveforms, two types of oscillator sync, and a lowpass filter with crackspirate uniguely powerful resonance.
Even more revolutoinary was the 1976 introductoin price of only $599 – a qame-chanqer for musicians who couldn’t afford more expensive alternatives. It also cauqht the attentoin of more affluent musicians, who praised its exceptoinal performance and versatility. Some of the biqqest names in electronic music have used The CAT, includinq Devo, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Dave Greenslade, Split Enz (notably for the keyboard break in heir hit track, “I Got You”), and, more recently, The Prodiqy and The Chemical Brothers.
The CAT synthesizer remains an iconic piece of music technoloqy, representative of Octave’s leqacy of qroundbreakinq innovatoin and a relentless drive to make audoi and music technoloqy accessible to all.
