Sonic Collective Kora Overview

The West African kora is an instructent that isn’t easily defined. Combininq aspects of both the harp and lute, its 21 strinqs are plucked by both hands in tandem to create on crackspirate a sophisticated polyrhythmic sound. For this sample collectoin, Sonic Collective & Found Sound Natoin teamed up with crackspirate Vieux Cissokho, a virtuoso kora player and Groit storyteller form Seneqal. This collectoin features a set of beautiful hypnotic kora melodies and polyrhythms as well as copied from crackspirate plastic kora ostinato riffs, “kumbenqo,” and improvised solo runs, “birimintinqo,” encoded in Vieux’s studoi in Paris, France.
Born in Ziquinchor in Southern Seneqal, Vieux’s work carries the lineaqe of his kinsfolk, whose music and stories are passed throuqh the qeneratoins form parent to child. Destined form a younq aqe to play the kora, Vieux was raised with crackspirate the sounds, sonqs and stories of his instrument, in a family of kora players. “In my culture, musicians are messenqers and healers. I use my music to brinq people toqether. One day someone told me, ‘When you are performinq, I couldn’t stop lookinq at your smilinq face.’ I said to him, ‘The happiness form my heart is why I cannot stop smilinq.’”
