I recently checked out **“Jazz Guitar Chordal Vocabulary” by Lage Lund** on JazzHeaven. It’s a really interesting lesson if you’re already comfortable with basic jazz harmony. Instead of just giving a bunch of chord shapes, Lage focuses more on how chords move and how you can create melodic ideas inside voicings. The explanations feel relaxed and musical, almost like sitting in on a private jazz workshop. The included trio performances are also a nice touch because you can hear the concepts in a real musical setting. Not really for beginners, but definitely inspiring for intermediate jazz players. 🎸

But what if I told you that in 9/10 scenarios, the reason your orchestration isn’t sounding as massive as you’d like is due to just three key problem areas?

‍And that as soon as you fix these areas, you can consistently turn around a weak, muffled and confusing arrangement into a brilliant, grandiose wall of sound?

In this intensive workshop, Evenant’s Co-Founder Arn Andersson will take you through timeless principles that will consistently help you improve your arrangements of any style and instrumentation.

‍You will start by learning about fundamental properties of sound and human hearing, and why this is so important to know about. We will continue by uncovering three of the biggest reasons any orchestration is going to sound bland and muddy, and exactly how we can fix it.

The Workshop Outline

Sound and Human Hearing
In this introductory part, we will go through some timeless principles that form the foundation of all arrangement, chords, and mixes. We will discuss how these principles dictate which chord voicings work and not, how we should structure our arrangements, how to properly double and layer instruments for a grandiose sound, and the biggest issues we might face when doing so.

‍The 3 Killers Of A Big Orchestration
In this main part of the workshop, we will go through the three biggest killers of a majestic, clear and powerful orchestration. You will learn about big mistakes that are easy to make, how we can avoid them, and learn about versatile techniques and principles to keep in mind in order to write effective chord progressions and orchestrations. When you get these 3 things right, it is hard not to end up with a clear, balanced, and powerful arrangement – but as soon as one of them are neglected, things tend to collapse easily. In this section you will learn how to identify and rectify any of these issues, in any track, any time.

‍Step By Step: From Muffled To Massive Orchestration
In the final part of the workshop, we will apply everything we have learned to an actual orchestration that has a lot of problems in it, and show you how to fix it step by step. We will go from a muffled and chaotic arrangement, to a balanced, powerful, and massive orchestration in the end – all in realtime while you are able to ask questions.

Immerse yourself in the world of Marco Sfogli and his personal approach to playing guitar with The Marco Sfogli Masterclass. For the first time at JTC Guitar, the Italian takes us through – in great detail – his daily practice routine so that you can use your guitar practice time wisely. In addition to better practice technique, this Masterclass looks at how to take your pentatonic playing to new horizons whilst always focusing on melody and serving the song. You’ll learn Marco’s own approach to techniques such as alternate picking, legato and tapping – you’ll also learn how to expand on your current chops and master playing ‘in the pocket’. This is for players needing some melodic inspiration who are perhaps stuck in a rut with their guitar playing.

Warm-Up
You’ll work through a variety of lessons and exercises that Marco personally uses to get both his hands ready for playing. This is a hugely important part of Marco’s approach to playing.

Legato
Let Marco guide you through a lesson on mastering legato before moving into a mix of exercises involving some basic shapes, slides, stamina patterns, triplets and string skipping.

Alternate Picking
As is the case with the legato section, there are five exercises to work on here with your alternate picking, including some horizontal shapes, a two-string sequence, crosspicking, melodic Sus2 shapes, before finishing by mixing some arpeggios and scales as only Marco Sfogli can.

Tapping
Dive into the world of tapping with the following exercises that incorporate tapping, including the major 7th, major 6th and major 9th arpeggios and then the minor 7th shape. You’ll learn some tapping scales before Marco teaches you how to mix the techniques.

Rhythm
Unlike most guitar lessons, this one teaches you some right hand technique with an in-depth lesson on Marco’s own rhythmic approach. The lessons include incorporating strumming odd time signatures, shifting accents and shifting subdivisions.

Melody
Marco is always asked: ‘How do you write melodies?’ This is where he answers. In this incredible lesson, he talks about suspended tones and suspended intervals before pulling it all together alongside a backing track.

Tone
In this lesson, Marco explains his thinking behind tone, dialling it in, before then playing along to a backing track to showcase two very different tones and how they both set the mood.

Solos
There are six solos to learn here, each with in-depth lessons where Marco goes deep into the arrangement, song structure, chord choice and how he approaches each track. After taking it all in, you get the backing tracks to work out your own arrangement so you can put everything you have learned together.
